About XTBG

Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1959 and is located in southern Yunnan Province, with a subsidiary branch in Kunming, the provincial capital. As a comprehensive research institution, XTBG integrates scientific research, species conservation, and science education. Situated in China's tropical region, the Garden focuses on biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of plant resources in South and Southeast Asia. Over the years, XTBG has become a leading center for tropical biodiversity and ecological research. It serves as a core unit for several major biodiversity conservation programs and has established a national big-data platform for the conservation of relocated plant species. XTBG offers doctoral and master's degree programs in ecology and botany, as well as postdoctoral research stations in biology and ecology. With extensive collaborations spanning more than 50 countries, XTBG's international influence continues to grow. It has now become China's most important base for tropical plant research, a key repository for tropical plant germplasm resources, and a major hub for science communication.

Position Overview

The Forest Canopy Ecology Research Group invites applications for Assistant or Associate Professor positions. We are seeking highly motivated scientists to join our team and contribute to cutting-edge research on insect biodiversity, conservation, and ecosystem functioning in tropical Southeast Asia.

Research Focus

Our group is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms driving the spatio-temporal dynamics of insect diversity in response to environmental change. We integrate long-term monitoring, field experiments, and advanced analytical tools to address fundamental and applied questions in ecology and conservation. We particularly seek candidates to lead research in two key areas:

Insect Conservation & Monitoring: Investigating the patterns, drivers, and mechanisms of insect population and community changes in the context of climate change and habitat transformation. This research will leverage our long-term monitoring platforms in Thailand, including the 16-year insect diversity dataset from the Khao Chong permanent plot, to understand long-term trends and predict future responses.

BVOC & Tri-trophic Interactions: Exploring the roles of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) in mediating tri-trophic interactions (plant-herbivore-natural enemy) within forest canopies and understories. This research will investigate how BVOCs influence community assembly and ecosystem processes.

Position Requirements

· Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Ecology, Entomology, Conservation Biology, or a closely related field, with experience as a postdoctoral researcher or special research assistant.

· Expertise: Strong background in community ecology, insect taxonomy, and/or chemical ecology is essential. Experience with molecular methods, spatial modeling, or sensor-based monitoring (e.g., acoustic recorders) is highly desirable.

· Track Record: A strong publication record in leading international journals, commensurate with career stage.

· Skills: Excellent communication skills in English (both written and spoken) are required. Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary and international team is essential.

· Age Limit: Applicants for Assistant Professor positions should generally be under 35, and for Associate Professor positions, under 40.

What We Offer

Research Environment: Access to world-class research facilities, including the XTBG canopy crane, state-of-the-art analytical labs, and a network of long-term research sites across Southwest China and Southeast Asia.

Funding & Support: A competitive start-up package  and salary commensurate with experience . Support will be provided for applying for external grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), CAS, and other funding agencies.

Working Location: Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Menglun, Mengla, Yunnan 666303, P. R. China
