Established in June 2001, and ground on the studies of plant phylogenetics and conservation biology, Plant Phylogeny and Conservation Group (PPCG) is expanding the concerned areas to the whole Southeast Asia, one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, aiming (1a) to carry out regional biodiversity surveys, identifying new species/taxonomic groups and (1b) to investigate the systematics and biogeography of certain tree species characteristic of this region, revealing the origin and evolution of certain species/groups as well as their geographic distributions. We will continually make efforts on the biodiversity conservation planning and the practical strategies. Based on phylogeny derived from DNA barcoding and next generation sequencing data, we will (2a) integrate the evolution theory, as well as the evolutionary history of species, into the actual demand and practice of regional biodiversity conservation. From the evolutionary perspective, we will (2b) expand and improve the regional biodiversity evaluation system, and explore more effective ways for regional biodiversity conservation.
