Research Group Introduction

Lipids serve as both fundamental structural components of plant cells and a vital energy source for plant reproduction and seed germination. They play a crucial role in plant survival, adaptation, and evolution, while also providing unique nutritional, health, and medicinal benefits to humans. Yunnan and its surrounding regions exhibit a remarkable three-dimensional climate characterized by diverse climatic types and distinct dry-wet seasons. This environment has fostered a rich diversity of plant species with broad adaptability to various climatic conditions, harboring abundant lipid-rich and medicinal plant resources. These natural assets create an ideal laboratory for unraveling the metabolic pathways of specialized metabolites and employing molecular biology methods to study plant adaptation and develop unique medicinal resources. Our research group focuses on elucidating the metabolic mechanisms of lipids and their roles in plant responses to environmental stress, as well as investigating the metabolic pathways and resource utilization of bioactive compounds with medicinal and health-promoting properties.

Research Focus:

Plant Lipid Metabolism and Innovation in Medicinal Plant Germplasm Resources

Research Areas:

1.Biological Significance of Plant Lipids

Membrane lipids and extracellular lipids play essential roles throughout the life cycle of plants. By studying unique biological phenomena and species in nature, we employ principles and methodologies from biochemistry, ecology, evolutionary biology, and molecular biology to uncover the regulatory patterns of lipids in plant responses to environmental changes and species distribution. We aim to decipher the mechanisms by which plants adapt to stress through lipid composition and signaling, providing a theoretical foundation for rapid domestication and breeding of novel plant varieties.

2.Metabolic Mechanisms of Specialized Functional Fatty Acids

Certain seed storage lipids possess unique functions for humans and specific plants. Using wild plant species enriched with specialized fatty acids as research materials, we integrate botany, multi-omics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology to reveal the molecular mechanisms underlying the synthesis and accumulation of these fatty acids. Our goal is to identify functional genes to support molecular-assisted breeding and bioengineering strategies.

3.Germplasm Innovation of Spatholobus suberectus (Jixueteng), the Source Plant of the Traditional Chinese Medicine "Jixueteng"

"Jixueteng"(Spatholobus suberectus Dunn) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb renowned for its blood-activating, tonifying, menstrual-regulating, pain-relieving, and muscle-relaxing properties. Despite high market demand, raw material shortages persist. The source plant, Spatholobus suberectus, is abundant in Yunnan. Our research encompasses resource surveys, metabolic mechanism studies, evaluation, screening of elite germplasm, and the development of propagation and cultivation techniques to address these challenges.
