利用自己作为一个分类学工作者的优势,在类群分类与系统发育的基础上开展进化生态学与繁殖生态学的研究。主要研究内容包括二型花柱进化、维持与破损的生态与分子机制的研究(报春花科、茜草科、木樨科等);真菌异养植物与菌根真菌互动进化的生态机制(水玉簪科)。目前开展的工作包括调控二型花柱超基因的进化、异型自交不亲和系统的解析等,相关工作有望在近年取得突破。发表论文200多篇,著作多部。第一或通讯作者论文发表的刊物包括Nature、Pnas、Nature Ecology & Evolution、ISME、Global Change Biology、New Phytologist、Journal of Integrative Plant Biology、Functional Ecology、American Naturalist、Agricultural and Forest Meteorology、Annals of Botany、Taxon、American Journal of Botany、Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society、Journal of Systematics & Evolution等
